IDRC has supported research in Guatemala since 1980. Early work focused on improving farming systems, health care, and access to water and sanitation. When the 36-year civil war ended in 1996, IDRC-supported initiatives addressed issues related to the peace accord and the legacy of war, including widespread poverty, inequality, and the demand for justice.
